Tractor units, Hovis Bakery, Oldfield Lane North

Some depressing news on a wet and overcast day. Premier Foods, owners of the Hovis brand, have announced the closure of its Greenford operation. The reasons given include increased competition and the rise in the cost of wheat as a result of this year’s heavy rain. Greenford’s residents remain as vulnerable to the impact of the weather on agriculture as they did when this was farmland. Hovis trucks are a familiar sight in the area but they will eventually disappear, along with two hundred jobs.
