The destruction of a Greenford landmark continues. The names of the companies involved have turned up on the barrier around the site and their plans for it are becoming clearer. The development will probably be a combination of homes and shops. Some local residents have asked that it includes a pub which is unlikely to happen considering that the proposed building will replace one that lost custom to the point that it closed. The new retail units will be added to those that struggle to attract shoppers. The new homes will be in an area that, according to the Church Urban Fund, is among the most deprived in the UK. I typed the pub’s postcode (UB6 9RZ) into the Fund’s online poverty look up tool and found that 30% of the children in this area are in poverty (as are 25% of local pensioners) and 10% of the population live in social rented housing. According to what the developer has told the Greenford Gazette this project will help to regenerate the area.
My thanks to Mike Chitty for directing me to the Church Urban Fund site.
